Guided tour: Osorno Volcano and Petrohué Falls from Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, Chile

The south of Chile and the region of Los Lagos


Chile is a large country with dreamy landscapes and endless opportunities for nature and adventure tourism. A perfect example of which is the region of Los Lagos. Here the nature is impressive and there are numerous protected areas which look like a paradise, such as the island of Chiloé or the National Park of Puyehue.


Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas


Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas are two cities that we are going to visit. Puerto Montt if the most densely populated, with over 200 000 inhabitants. It is located in the bay which is an important strategic location. After the German colonization, the mixture of the German culture with the Chilote culture left a result of a great interest.

The other town, Puerto Varas is smaller and sits on the shores of Lake Llanquihue. It is one of the tourist centers of the region, located at the foot of the Osorno volcano.


Outdoor activities


The vast natural areas are the biggest advantage for the touristic activities. Among its natural monuments we can find the National Park of Vicente Pérez Rosales, the oldest Chilean national park with turquoise coloured rivers, such as the river of Petrohué.

Here you will find impressive volcanoes such as the volcano of Puntiagudo, the Tronador hill and the Osorno volcano. The latter is one of the mythical volcanoes of Chile, with a very well marked cone, visible from many parts  of the region and located in the Andes mountain range.


Enjoy the route


The activity will start at Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, visiting the southern shore of Lake Llanquihue until reaching the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park.

We will have a whole day to discover the charms of the Saltos del Petrohué. Here 3 beautiful trails which go through Coihue Forest are located. The views of the Osorno volcano are spectacular!

The lake of Todos los Santos is located in Petrohué  with a view of the Puntiagudo Volcano, and a possibility to sail with the local people and have lunch (included) in the same place.

In the afternoon we will climb the Osorno Volcano to an approximate height of 1,100 meters, from where we will enjoy beautiful views of the Cordillera and Lake Llanquihue. During the tour you will have a chance to walk to the red crater, with a beautiful view of the volcano and Mount Tronador bordering Argentina. To finish our trip we will make a short trail to Laguna Verde and Lago Llanquihue, the last place of visit in the park.
