Outdoor activities in Asturias: what to do
Asturias is an autonomous community located northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Its best showcase are its stunning Picos de Europa , but gracefully, it has other charms with which to flavor the first ones.

The climate of the Asturian region, an oceanic climate characterized by rain, makes this area of Spain, and also its neighboring communities, enjoy some of the best green landscapes in the country .

And it is that something must have that color that invites the villager and the visitor to leave the cities (although also full of monuments and enchanting corners) to jump fully into the mountain, the meadows; to enjoy nature in a practically virgin state.

Among the options that the traveler has, once he steps on this land, there are adventure sports , cultural routes guided by small towns, such as Cangas de Onís and his obligatory visit to the Lakes of Covadonga, with its spectacular landscape of three glacial lagoons Enol, La Ercina and El Bricial, and the charm of herds of grazing cows at ease, or visits to the different National or Natural Parks. That, if Asturias can boast of something, it is of zones gathered in protective figures.

To name a few examples, we will find in Asturias the well-known National Park of the Picos de Europa, first National Park of Spain, declared in 1.918, the Natural Park of Somiedo, the Natural Park of the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias, where the bear brown and oak are the main inhabitants of this unprecedented area of southwest Asturias, or the Redes, where between beech and oak stains, the bear, the Iberian desman and the Cantabrian capercaillie still inhabit some of their places.

The Natural Park of Las Ubiñas-La Mesa houses the Camino Real de la Mesa, Roman road that communicated with the Leon region. Or the Natural Park of Ponga, with spectacular gorges like that of Ponga or the Beyos.

Asturias is a paradise for hiking , walking, walking, riding a bicycle or climbing for the most expert. Among the most famous mountain routes we can choose the route of the Lakes, Hoces del Esva, Pico Pierzu or the Pienzu, the viewpoint of Urdiales, the famous route of Cares, Mount Camba, The Encantau walk, or green ways to do bicycle touring as in the Senda del Oso, the Cordal de la Carisa or the green route Turón.

The cicloturistas routes like and much, between them we can name the route Pendueles - Llanes, of about 14 km, and that after leaving behind the cliffs you arrive at the lookout of the river Purón, from where you can appreciate the beauty of its mouth.

For experts in ascents, the Central Massif, or the Urrieles, hosts the highest summit of the Cantabrian Mountains, Torrecerredo with 2,648 meters, and the emblematic summit of Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes of 2,519 meters. Other well-known ascents are the Pico Cornón, Peña Ubiña, Tiatordos, Pico Zorro or El Cabril.

You can also visit the Integral Nature Reserve of Muniellos, for hiking in the ascent to the Lagunas de la Peña, Grande, Fonda and La Isla.

In the Sierra del Suave, the legend of distant times resounds at a gallop rhythm. They are the Asturcones , an autochthonous breed of horses that have lived semi-wild for thousands of years and that once captivated historians of ancient Rome.

We could not forget either one of the forts, not only of Asturias, but of Spain as a whole: the Camino de Santiago . Fortunately for the pilgrims, both the coastal road and the primitive road cross Asturias from east to west.

This fortune is also shared by local people, and the fact that the Camino de Santiago favors sustainable development and local commerce, since in different parts of the Asturian geography, stopping places and establishments are provided for pilgrims to feel all the needs of the hard but majestic journey.

The reasons why one chooses a destination and not another can be the most varied, but to help you, here we leave you 6 reasons to choose Asturias.
Reasons to enjoy rural tourism in Asturias
# 1 If you have not come before, you have enough reason

Asturias, like many other places in the Spanish geography, is a wonderful corner at all levels. Place of reference for the activities in the nature, dare with one of them and, later, go to replenish forces hand in hand with its excellent gastronomy.

# 2 Enjoy the green region par excellence

It is the oceanic climate that is responsible for the greenness that characterizes the north of Spain, and Asturias, as it could not be otherwise, is a good example of green meadows and forests of different shades that delight those of us who seek nature as an escape route from day to day. Breathe pure air, breathe Asturias.

# 3 Immerse yourself in the culture of the Asturian peoples through the natural environment that surrounds them

In Asturias there are still many towns that live on the resources that nature gives them. Livestock in open fields or vineyards in places of unparalleled beauty are today the means of subsistence for many Asturian families, despite the arrival of technologies and new jobs that have brought with them. Visit the area and immerse yourself in the culture of Asturias in its impressive natural surroundings.

# 4 Meet the fauna of the Picos de Europa

Perhaps it is the brown bear that always acquires great prominence when pronouncing the words Asturias and fauna, but there are other animals of the place that also deserve recognition, such as the chamois, the brown bear, Iberian wolf, the roe deer, the otter and a surprising variety of birds: eagles, ducks, vultures, jays, owls and, in the vicinity of the coast, the Eurasian oystercatcher, the shag shag or the common paiño.

# 5 Visit that kind of houses erected on four supports: the granaries

On granaries we can be talking hours and hours. Surely, each villager, in each zone, will have their particular way of building them, and even different versions will be told about their history. Go for a walk with one of those lovely grandparents for the most natural Asturias and learn beyond what is in the books.

# 6 Make adventure sports in the middle of nature

If, in addition to nature, you are addicted to the adrenaline rush, Asturias is also an optimal destination for you. Canyoning, caving, kayaking, rafting, climbing or via ferratas that will make you release all the energy accumulated during the long days of work. Emotions and fun kick your body out of stress.

Asturias is not to read it, it is to know it. And now it's your turn.
