Choose your activity in Nature

Hiking in Extremadura: Where will your feet take you?
Nature overflows in Extremadura. The famous Monfragüe National Park, the fascinating Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark, the Tajo International Natural Park, or the Cornalvo Natural Park are just some of the examples of the fantastic nature that this community contains. Therefore, in addition to the birding, walking on trails Extremadura is the favorite activity to do during any time of year.

Enjoy hiking in Extremadura is possible thanks to the hundreds of kilometers of trails and paths that many traced with the passage of history, as the route of Carlos V through the Jerte Valley or the route Molino de la Negra where you can admire impressive dolmens. With more than 60 protected natural areas, the hiker can find authentic gems of nature.

You have the opportunity to know on foot the fantastic beauty of the Sierra de Gata, the Tajo International Natural Park, the Cornalvo Natural Park, the Garganta de los Infiernos Natural Reserve, and many other places that make Extremadura a unique place to observe the nature.

If you travel there, visiting the Monfragüe National Park is almost a mandatory stop. This National Park contains the largest expanse of Mediterranean forest in the world and one of the best preserved. With a wide variety of fauna and flora, hikers will enjoy different routes to discover it, as well as observe landscapes of holm oaks and rocks so typical of the Iberian landscape. The Tajo and its tributary, the Tiétar, give the aquatic touch to this Park and in the quartzite there are large cliffs that make home to the wonderful colonies of griffon vultures, and other birds such as the peregrine falcon, the Bonelli's eagle, and the Royal Owl.

It is also important to highlight the Tajo International Natural Park, since it remains one of the last refuges of endangered species in the Mediterranean forest. It contains a biodiversity of wonderful fauna and flora, and acts as a natural border between Spain and Portugal. While walking through its paths you can admire some of these endangered species, such as the Iberian imperial eagle, the black stork or the crayfish. But in addition to animals and vegetation, you will see much more, because wherever you look there will be a story that will have traces of another time.

So if you visit Extremadura, do not forget to take your boots. You have different paths to travel through their lands, and you can choose which of them to walk first.
Hiking in Extremadura: 6 reasons to discover Extremadura
1. Discover History on foot

Follow the steps by which Queen Isabella the Catholic to reach the Mirabel Palace, those of King Charles V through the Jerte Valley, travel further back in time through the Roman Bridge of Alcantara or visit even more ancient vestiges such as the dolmens in the Tajo Internacional Natural Park.

Who needs a time machine? Your feet can move you to other times without having to defy the laws of physics.

2. How best to observe nature

There are many ways to enjoy nature and observe it, but like to go on foot, none. Having the power to stop at any time to capture more closely that image that you want to remember for a long time is one of the many advantages of hiking.

3. Your health will thank you

Walking is one of the recommended activities to do at least 30 minutes a day to stay in good physical health, but also mentally. Is there a difference between walking through the city and walking in the middle of nature? Of course there is!

Change the stressful sounds of your city by the songs of the birds and the noise of the leaves in the wind. It is the best to clear the mind and breathe clean air.

4. A unique plan

Make a route to enjoy with whoever you want, be it your friends, family or your partner. There are incredible routes that you can live with those you want. Or even make them alone, to simply connect you and nature.

Getting out of the routine is often a necessity, and disconnecting to dedicate a moment to yourself should be a priority.

5. Support sustainable tourism

Your hiking adventure can be the first step to support sustainable tourism. Within sustainable tourism practices, minimizing your environmental footprint when traveling is essential, and what can leave less footprint than your boot? While it is true that we have to look where we tread, the footprint of our car will always be less than that of our car.

6. Magical and unique places to visit

Advances through story forests and unique roads of Extremadura. Its natural and national parks are a wonder for the hiker.

You will want to discover all the fauna and flora, know their people and their stories. If you go to Extremadura for hiking, you will experience an unbeatable nature.
