Alajuela and Boca Tapada
The activity will be carried out in the province of Alajuela, located in the north of the country (sharing a border with Nicaragua), in the Central Valley. Due to its tropical climate you will find a numerous species.
For bird watching we will travel along Boca Tapada, in the northern lowlands. It is known to be one of the few nesting places of the Great Green Macaw (Lapa Verde), in danger of extinction. Maquenque Ecological Reserve is one of the natural enclaves.
A 6 day tour
Day 1: San José and Boca Tapada
Transfer from San José to the plains of northern Costa Rica. You will arrive at your ecological accommodation in the afternoon. Here you will enjoy 500 hectares of virgin tropical forest with a great variety of flora and fauna.
We will walk in the surrounding area of Sarapiquí to observe birds in Selva Verde such as toucans, large green macaws, wood thrushes, gray-necked racan, sun bird, rufous momoto and hummingbirds with violent crowns, among other species of the Selva Verde reserve.
Night: Boca Tapada
Day 2: Boca Tapada
Although it will be difficult to leave the breakfast area, due to the continuous traffic of toucans, honeycreepers, aracaris, peacocks, everything can be seen from a few meters away. You will walk along the trails of the hotel to look for more birds or another type of fauna that inhabits the tropical jungle and the river near the lodge.
You can even hop on a boat for a very exciting ride along the river to see crocodiles and other aquatic wild animals! More than 350 species of birds have been counted in this area.

Day 3: Boca Tapada - Caño Negro
Enjoy the scenery while traveling through Costa Rica!
Boat trip to explore the area of Los Chiles and Río Frío and to discover the birds that are common in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Night: Caño Negro
Day 4: Caño Negro - Río Celeste
Caño Negro has an area of 9960 hectares and is one of the most important biological areas of the country. It is one of the four major wetland areas in the world, which is also a RAMSAR site. It is composed of the Caño Negro lagoon and the Frio river. We will visit to the observation tower of the reserve.
This Wildlife Refuge is perhaps the best place to see Jabiru, in danger of extinction, and it is one of the best birding locations in Costa Rica. Other common birds that are common in these marshes and herbaceous areas are the yellow-headed vulture, the cranes, the black-necked hawk, the bright ibis, the kingfisher or the yellow-tailed oropendola.
Day of transfer to Upala and Río Celeste, on the outskirts of Tenorio National Park.
Night: Río Celeste
Day 5: Catarata Río Celeste - Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio
After breakfast, you will walk through the Tenorio Volcano National Park, better known for the beautiful Celeste River with light blue waters caused by sulfur emanation and the precipitation of calcium carbonates.
The primary cloud forest and the rain forest cover the whole area of the park, which holds numerous species of flora and fauna in its multiple life zones, rivers, waterfalls and thermal waters. You can explore all the natural attractions of the park in a walk of 2.6 km and, of course, observe all the birds that live in the park, since this is another spot perfect for birding in Costa Rica.
Night: Río Celeste.
Day 6: End of the tour
