A 4 Day Tour
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado - Río Tambopata - Refugio Amazonas
The adventure begins with the arrival to Puerto Maldonado (transfer from the airport to the headquarters) and reception by our guide.
Upon the arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will meet you at the airport and take you to the headquarters of Puerto Maldonado for ten minutes. After, we will transfer you from the headquarters of Pto. Maldonado to the port of the Tambopata River.
From Bordering Puerto Maldonado we will go 20 kilometers away to the port of the Tambopata River, entering the Native Community of Infierno. Then we will continue from Port of the Tambopata River to Refugio Amazonas.
The trip of two and a half hours by boat awaits us to get from the port of Tambopata to Refugio Amazonas. It will take us further than to the community of Infierno and the control point of the Tambopata National Reserve (which covers more than 1.3 million hectares).
Upon the arrival, the hotel manager will welcome you and inform you about the important safety and navigation tips. After the dinner, we will go to look for alligators. We will go to the riverbank at night, exploring the shores with headlights and lanterns to catch the red flashes of the reflection of the eyes of alligators.
Day 2: Lake Oxbow - Canopy - Farm visit
We will start the day with a delicious breakfast and then visit Oxbow Lake. We will paddle around the lake in a canoe or take a catamaran, looking for wildlife on the lake, such as hoatzin, alligators and horned screams, hoping to also observe otters and macaws.
We will continue with a thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas to the canopy tower that rises to 25 meters of height. A railing staircase that runs through the center of the tower provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower was built on high ground, which cover an even broader horizon of endless forests that extend into the Tambopata National Reserve. From here, it is possible to see various species, such as toucans, macaws and raptors.
We will return for lunch. Afterwards, we will visit the farm located five minutes away downstream from the lodge. It is a property of the charismatic Don Manuel from the neighboring community of Condenado. He cultivates a variety of popular and unknown crops in the Amazon.
Along the route we will find a variety of plants and trees that are used by the local communities for a variety of purposes. We will learn about the medicinal uses and other uses of Ajo-Sacha, Yucca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among others.
The day will end with a dinner and a conference prepared by the staff of Refugio Amazonas about the threats, opportunities and conservation projects in the Tambopata National Reserve.
Day 3: Parrot Clay Lick - Brazil Nut Trail
Once we will finish breakfast, we will go to see the parrots on the Collpas (a placewhere animals come to ingest clay from the ravines of the rivers), fifteen minutes away by boat and one hour on foot. This clay lick is used by both parrots and parakeets. You will see species like corporeal amazons and yellow crowns, blue headed pionus, severe macaws and orange parrots (Barraband).
We will return for lunch and continue with the visit to "la nuez de brasil", a beautiful and ancient forest of Brazilian nuts which have been harvested here for centuries. It is considered as one of the few products harvested sustainably in the rainforest.
The day will end with a nice dinner and a night walk to see those mammals that are the most active at night, like frogs. We will hear sounds as well as their natural histories.
