Mount Kenya is the second highest African peak. For the experienced mountain climber, this peak is one of the world great challenges. This mountain, located in Mount Kenya National park has a unique position on the equator, offering climbing seasons and route conditions varying with the sun's position.
These are our recommended routes for technical climbing at Mount Kenya:
- From December to March
Normal Routes, Standard IV: South West Ridge, Standard v (Rock routes)
- From July-September to October
North Face Standard route, Standard IV (Rock Route)
North Face Sirimon route Approach
- From August to December
South-East Face Route. , Standard IV, Ice Window, Standard V (Ice routes)
- From Mid July to the end of September

The attempt to reach the main summit of Point Lenana is available for people who are not wishing to attempt the much more difficult twin summits of Mt. Kenya Nelion and possibly Batian- it’s a technically much more difficult scramble. Our local guide has the knowledge and experience of the climbing routes on Nelion and Batian peaks, having lots of information and local knowledge.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Nairobi - Old Moses Camp
You will be picked up your trekking Guide at an agreed location in Nairobi. Thereafter drive to Nanyuki, meet with the rest of the climbing crew and drive together to Sirimon park gate for check- in, this is the start of the trekking to Old Moses camp. Overnight @ Old Moses camp.
Day 2: Old Moses - Shiptons Camp
After an early breakfast head out and hike up to Shiptons camp, the view are spectacular! Picnic lunch is served enroute. Arriving at SHIPTON camp in late afternoon.
Day 3: Shiptons Camp (Acclimatization day)
Leave the Camp at 9 am and trek up to the Hausberg Col and Hausberg valley to acclimatize.
Day 4: Shiptons Camp - Austrian Hut
Leave the camp and trek towards the Eastern side of the mountain to Austrian Hut.
Arriving in the afternoon, later in the evening trek to point Lenana for the sunset.
Day 5: Summit attempt to Batian or Nelion
Day 6: Descend to Shiptons Camp - Old Moses
After a successful climb, we will descent together to Shiptons Camp and later to Old Moses camp.
Day 7: Old Moses Camp – Nairobi
After a hearty breakfast descend to the park gate and thereafter meet with your transfer back to Nairobi.
