Venture out and discover the wonders that nature offers you in the Peneda-Geres National Park, Portugal.
Peneda-Geres National Park
It is the only Portuguese national park and is located in the north of the country. It has an area of 702.9 km² and extends through the municipalities of Melgaço, Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, Terras de Bouro and Montalegre.
Within its beautiful geography, we can find mountain ranges that exceed 1500 meters high and a strong presence of water, with streams and rivers being a constant throughout the park. Likewise, the human population of the park amounts to approximately 10,000 inhabitants, who are almost entirely in charge of planting laboratories, mainly corn.
Rich biodiversity
If Pineda-Geres is characterized by something, it is for its varied biodiversity, especially for vegetation. Due to the average annual temperature (10 degrees) and abundant rainfall, green landscapes are needed where oaks, birches or pine trees abound among many others. The fauna is not so prolific due to human action, but still we can enjoy the presence of roe deer, golden eagles and even Iberian wolves. They are joined by wild boars, hawks, small reptiles and amphibians and the garrano, a Portuguese native horse that lives wild throughout the park.
Activity
Being the only national park in Portugal, there are many who visit every year. The visits are very controlled since the park could not have the massive entry of tourists. The most important places are the typical Portuguese religious buildings, and we can find many sanctuaries. Another sign of identity are the waterfalls that tourists visit and which are accentuated when the place has little water.
We propose a 5-hour route to discover in depth the most beautiful corners of the Natural Park.
