La Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve: a high spot of biodiversity.
La Mancha wetlands are located in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, the center of Spain and called “Don Quixote’s Land”. The wetland complex is part of 27 wetlands’ Nature 2000 sites, such us Ruidera Natural Park or Daimiel National Park.
In 1980, UNESCO declared La Mancha wetlands “Biosphere Reserve”, in recognition of their importance for their water birds and their rich biodiversity. Moreover, La Mancha wetlands are among the most species-rich wetlands in Western Europe. Manjavacas Lagoon (our destiny in this tour) is a RAMSAR site of international importance and part of the Nature Reserve.
Visit with us the southern part of the province, characterized by the presence of very flat agricultural landscapes. It includes a circular route by Manjavacas Lagoon, famous for its aquatic fauna and halophyte vegetation. This is a saline lagoon with frequent presence of shore, aquatic, steppe birds.
In the second part of the tour, we will visit the famous “balcony of La Mancha”, an amazing landmark where you can see four provinces of La Mancha and visit the centuries-old flour mills. Taste traditional food in a family restaurant (pisto manchego, hot and cold soaps, hunting meat, lamb with local wine) * Menu for vegetarian is also available.
Birds Check-list (short-list): Greater flamingos, Gull-billed tern, Common shelduck, White-headed duck, Red-crested pochard, Bearded reedling, Savi’s warbler, Water rail, Western marsh harrier.
Extended stops (depend on the season and water levels in wetlands): Castle of Belmonte (tickets included) or Pedro Muñoz Lagoon.
