Activity description
If you’re staying in the Algarve and you like birdwatching, make sure to join this wonderful birdwatching tour through Portugal’s stunning Ría Formosa area.

Enjoy a 3-hour private birdwatching tour in the protected areas of Ludo and Quinta do Lago and discover the best of the Algarve bird life with an expert local guide.

On this private tour we explore the protected areas of Ludo and Quinta do Lago. These two areas are extraordinary places for birdwatching, in fact, they are some of the best birding spots in the Algarve.

Put on your birding hat and have a great time out discovering one of the best birdwatching spots in the Algarve.

This area is a birdwatchers paradise and your knowledgeable local guide will show you the great diversity of birds and make the most of your time spent in this beautiful protected wetland in the Algarve.

Here, we find a mosaic of pine woodlands, saltpans, farmland, marshlands and freshwater ponds. Some of the local specialties are the Little Bittern, the Purple Swamphen, the Red-crested Pochard and exotic Black-headed weaver. These species can be observed in the reedy pool on the edge of freshwater ponds. Autumn is marked by several migrant passerines, including Melodious and Willow Warblers, Tawny Pipit and Bluethroat.

The reed beds are important for several nesting waterbird species and also for large numbers of migrating passerines during both autumn and spring migration. All over the year, species like Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet and Kentish Plover can be observed. Other breeders include Collared Pratincole, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Yellow Wagtail, Woodchat Shrike and beach-nesting Little Tern. Winter is quite interesting, mostly due to the huge concentrations of waders and ducks that find refuge here. The Caspian Tern, Osprey, Black-shouldered Kite, Marsh Harrier and Booted Eagle are other regular visitors during the coldest period of the year.

Sightings of reasonable numbers of the Greater Flamingo are common all year round and excellent views of the sociable Azure-winged Magpie, the hard to miss Hoopoe and the lovely Sardinian Warbler are some of the other highlights.

Ludo and Quinta do Lago are both well worth discovering. Join us on a birdwatching tour in this beautiful site. We promise you a memorable day out around birds.

Good value kayak rental for the wetlands of Faro. It's a really interesting route from Faro town through the twisting marshes on the way to Faro beach. You have a low vantage point from the water so it's tricky to maintain a sense of distance and scale, but since the only place you can end up is your destination you're at no real risk of getting lost. The agency are very good and provide a map and basic route advice. It was €35 for a four hour rental, which was enough time for a return trip, stopping for a picnic on a private beach about two thirds of the way. A great day out for those wanting to see something a bit different and who aren't afraid to row for it.

Read about "Lands" in Algarve tourist guide book - a little hidden in a shop offering other trips etc but clear on Google maps for location. Helped out straight away on request for kayak hire, just had to wait 5 or 10 mins whilst other trips departed but we hadn't booked - just turned up on spec. Kayak / paddles in great condition - felt quite stable whilst on water. Were given guidance on safe routes to take and a map to help us navigate. Fully enjoyed 2 1/2 hours out on the water. Thank you!

Amazing tour, I strongly recommend this one over the more touristic ones. -The boat was quite small (max 6-8 people) so we could go in small canals with a boat not being overcrowded. -~45 min tour with electric boat (very silent) -Amazing guide: biological student, passionate about the area and fluent in English & Portuguese.
