Activity description

Due to its geographical position between Europe and Africa, and between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar is a hot spot for migrating birds between both continents, and it surely is a place that any birder shouldn't miss.

Although many bird groups use this flyway, soaring birds are the most spectacular ones due to their large size and their way of crossing the Strait, forming flocks of hundreds or even thousands of birds, as occurs with Black kites, White storks or Honey buzzards.

The Strait of Gibraltar Natural Park has exceptional places for birdwatching, and we can find, among other ones, Los Lances Beach Natural Reserve, La Plata Hills and some view points along the coast, where in addition to being able to watch thousands of birds every year cross the Strait of Gibraltar in their migrations, you can enjoy wonderful views of the African continent.

We have our own telescopes and if you don't have binoculars, we can lend you some.

On the 8th October 2022, we spent an excellent day birdwatching, led by Victor Porras of Birding Tarifa. Victor took us to a series of locations that were excellent for spotting booted eagles, short toed eagles, vultures, black kites, sparrow hawks, kestrel and black storks. Victor was expert in identifying individual species at a distance, and was very knowledgeable about their flying capabilities, feeding habits, migration patterns, breeding and other characteristics. We also saw treecreeper, firecrest, cattle egrets, corn buntings, Sardinian warblers, Dunlin and many other species at a marshland site. Victor was at all times thoughtful, easy going, friendly and unhurried, and was fully committed to ensuring that we experienced a full, enjoyable and eventful day. As a result, we had a wonderful time, we learned a great deal, and we were able to take many excellent photographs. We will definitely come back for another birding and wildlife trip in near future and we have no hesitation in giving Victor and Birding Tarifa our highest recommendation.

superb low flying Osprey. Short toed lark, little stint , savi warbler, Collared pratincole and many more great waders. Finally off to a special place near jerez for white headed ducks and red crested pochard. It was amazing. Nearly forgot the purple gallinule

I recently enjoyed an excellent day's bird watching with Birding Tarifa in La Janda and the Barbate Lagoons. My affable guide, Victor, impressed me with his English skills and especially his expertise at spotting wildlife. He was generous with his time and flexibly allowed me to change my trip date at short notice. I'd definitely go with them again.
