Birding in Tenerife
Birding in Tenerife is like being in paradise for all those who, apart from their fondness for birds, want to know more about the evolution and peculiar habits of this unique island fauna.
The island is home to some 60 breeding bird species, among which the fascinating Blue Chaffinch stands out, as it constitutes a local endemism, the Canary Islands Chiffchaff and the Laurel and Bolle’s pigeons, as they are exclusive to the Canaries. Others, such as the Plain Swift, the Berthelot’s Pipit and the Atlantic Canary, are shared with other archipelagos of Macaronesia.
The rest of the birds that breed in Tenerife are represented by endemic subspecies, both local and regional, as well as native birds of unquestionable interest, such is the case of the distinctive Barbary Falcon. In addition, we cannot forget the migrant species that arrive on the island, either sporadically, which would be the atractive rarities, or regularly.
